How to Create a Hair Care Routine

Depending on your hair type, porosity level or what point you are in your hair journey, everyone’s hair requires different things. A hair regimen refers to the steps and products required for your personal hair care. The goal of any hair care regimen is to increase the moisture levels in the hair while minimizing breakage and damage. The great thing about a hair regimen is that it is customizable, allowing you to incorporate products that your hair responds well to and omitting those that are unnecessary for you. You don’t have to break the bank to create your routine and build your product collection- majority of the products that I adore are budget friendly and under $8 a piece! So with that being said, let’s get to it. Here is the basic hair care routine outline.

To start off, you’ll need a few basic products. (I’ve included links for my favourite ones, click to check them out.)

  1. Sulfate-free shampoo
  2. Deep conditioner
  3. Leave-in conditioner or hair milk
  4. An oil or butter of your choice- I recommend castor oil or shea butter
  5. Strengthening or protein treatment

See my previous post about the tools I use on my hair. Now that you have your essentials, here is a simple outline of how you can use these products to create a routine that works for you.

Daily

  • Moisturize and seal with oil nightly, even if your hair is in a protective style- focus on your scalp and the ends of your hair
  • Use a satin or silk bonnet, scarf or pillow case to protect your hair while sleeping

Weekly/Biweekly

  • Use a light conditioner to finger detangle before shampooing to minimize shedding
  • Wash with a gentle cleanser
  • Deep condition with in direct heat
  • Wear your hair in a protective or a style that requires low manipulation

Monthly

  • Strengthening or protein treatment
  • Trim if necessary
  • Take down existing protective style
  • Evaluate current products and make adjustments according to the status of your hair

Good luck with building your personalized regimen and remember- patience is key in this natural hair game!

  1. I put little to no effort into my hair but after reading this I feel like I should try a bit more! I have super thin hair so there’s not much I can do it with it except use thickening shampoo & conditioner (which works, but maybe makes my hair a bit too fluffy after brushing!) Maybe one day I’ll try start a routine like you’ve suggested. Nice post!

    1. Routines are great, they help you get to know your hair better and understand how to use products that will give you the best results! Good luck 🙂
